Restaurant Reviews-Benjarong Royal Thai Restaurant (Dusit Thani Bangkok)
Benjarong Royal Thai Restaurant, Dusit Thani Bangkok
Looking for an authentic Thai Royal Cuisine restaurant in Bangkok? Benjarong Royal Thai Cuisine Restaurant located in Dusit Thani Bangkok’s lower lobby level is one of the most famous Royal Thai cuisine restaurants in the city. Walking into the restaurant is like going back in time. The restaurant is amazingly stunning filled with fresh lotus flowers and beautiful classical style furniture creating a feeling of sophistication and warmth, overlooking a cascading waterfall. The interior ceiling of the restaurant is intricately decoarted with teakwood carvings and I was told that not a single nail was used for the ceiling fixtures. It bears a further testimony to the excellence of Thai craftsmanship. The most beautiful five-coloured porcelain crockery called Benjarong is produced in Ampawa distict in Samut Songkram province. It represents the exquisite craftsmanship and beauty of Thai art. It was originally reserved for Royal and ceremonial purposes in the past and a restaurant that preserves the tradition of Royal Thai cuisine carries its name, is Benjarong Royal Thai Cuisine Restaurant

It was a great pleasure of meeting Sous Chef Mr. Surasak Kongsawat, or Chef Noi who has over 18 years experience in Thai cuisine and has received numerous awards in national and international fruits and vegetables carving competition. In our conversation, I have learned more about cooking Thai cuisine. He is a friendly, humble, down to earth guy with a great sense of humour. Some people say that most chefs guard their secrets but he believes in sharing the knowledge and skill when it comes to Thai cooking and a strong believer in giving his dishes a personal touch such as using fresh Kale (mustard) as a leaf wrapper for a popular Thai snack, Mieng Kham. Chef Surasak often tries to discover what dishes will best suit the taste and preferences of Dusit’s guests, especially the regular diners who have come to fully appreciate Chef Surasak’s personalized attention and readiness to serve. Even royalties from afar miss his cooking!!!

Thai Cuisine appeals to a wide variety of tastes, and is not alwalys spicy. Thai cooking features five distinct flavours – bitter, salty, sweet, sour and hot. “Thai cusine is indeed a harmony of tastes, colours and textures achieved by blending herbs and spices to enhance natural tastes which appeal to the senses as well as to the palate.” according to Chef Surasak . Dish like “Gaeng Phed Ped Yang” is a good example, the roasted duck is served with salted eggs and sweeten Pork in red curry . As you eat you can feel all these 3 tastes combined together, making it a memorable dish. Soup lovers can look forward to trying ???Gaeng Som Pla Chon??, a tamarind-infused soup cooked over a low heat with fresh water fish (snakehead), the soup has a smooth, creamy texture and completely changed my prespective about Gaeng Som that I had in Phuket last year.

Amongst the dishes offered include the award winning ,”Phad Thai Gung“, Thai fried rice noodles with prawns, bean curd, bean sprouts, egg and ground peanuts. The dish is artistically presented with extraordinary eye appeal. From time to time, I was introduced to more authentic and signature Thai dishes from the restaurant such as ???Phad Pak Wan??, fried Thai spinach with minced pork and shrimp in oyster sauce. Pak Wan (Sauropus androgynus) is a traditional vegetable in Thailand and Southeast Asia found growing wild in the North and North East of Thailand and the shoot tips have been sold as tropical asparagus. In March each year, there is an event celebrating this humble plant called Pak Whan Pa Rai San Phit Festival at Ban Mor District in Saraburi province. ???Gung Hom Sabai??, deep-fried prawns wrapped in egg noodles is a signature dish originated from the Chinese’s recipes. For desert, I ordered “Khao Niew Ma Muang and Ice cream“, sticky rice with ripe mango served with almond coconut ice cream. The coconut ice cream loaded with nutty almond pieces for added flavour paired off excellently with the authentic Thai desert of mango with sweet sticky rice.
